City warns of water testing scam

Londoners are being told to be wary of anyone claiming to be a city employee offering to conduct water tests at their home.

City officials advised homeowners Wednesday to use discretion if presented with information from a door-to-door salesperson or a telemarketer indicating they are affiliated with the city and are testing tap water.

Residents are being reassured that London’s water, while sourced from Lake Erie and Lake Huron, is treated to surpass provincial quality standards.

If water quality issues do arise, city staff will have proper identification and will not try to sell any sort of product.

The Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services reminds that no door-to-door salespeople are authorized to make a health-based test on your water and chemical trickery may make your water look brown, just because of natural mineral content.

Anyone contacted by a salesperson suggesting they are a municipal employee should call the city to confirm the claim at 519-661-4739.
