Man sent to hospital after being struck by lightning

After a man in Norfolk County was struck by lightning, police are reminding people that there is no safe place to be outside during a thunderstorm.

It happened in St. Williams early Saturday evening. Police responded to a call that a 65-year-old man had been struck by lightning.

The man was working outside in a field when the incident occurred. He was airlifted to a Hamilton area hospital for further treatment.

According to Environment Canada, six to 10 people are killed and another 160 injured every year in Canada as a result of lightning strikes. They recommend going inside a building or enclosed vehicle as soon as thunder can be heard. If you do find yourself outdoors during a storm, some safety tips include:

•Avoid trees, higher ground, prominent objects and any kind of shelters that aren't grounded

•Take shelter in low-lying areas such as valleys or ditches, watching for flooding

•If you are with a group of people in an open area such as a soccer field, spread out, crouch down on the balls of your feet, place your arms around your knees and bend forward. Be the smallest size possible and minimize your contact with the ground, avoiding laying flat.
