Londoners reminded not to ditch Christmas trees at the curb

With the holiday season quickly coming to a close, Londoners are being reminded how they can properly dispose of their Christmas trees.

The City of London is advising residents to take winter greenery to one of the city's EnviroDepots. They are open Wednesdays and Sundays and from noon to 5 p.m. during three special drop off days on December 30, January 2, and January 9.

All decorations, tinsel, garland, tree skirts, and lights need to be removed from trees destined for the EnviroDepot.

Curbside pickup of Christmas trees is no longer available in London. City council scrapped the winter evergreen pickup, which saw approximately 13,000 trees collected annually, as a cost saving measure at the start of 2020.

Residents not yet ready to part with their old trees can temporarily place them in their backyard to provide winter protection for birds. Trees that are three metres or shorter can then be placed at the curb for regular yard waste collection in the spring.

Other ways Londoners can help waste and recycling operators with the post holiday collection include flattening boxes, placing blue bins and garbage containers on level ground and not on snow banks, and putting non recyclable items like Christmas wrap, bags, and decorations in the trash.

Anyone unsure about what goes in the blue bin is advised to download the Recycle Coach app.
