UPDATE: Freezing rain may impact morning commute

The morning commute in southwestern Ontario may be slippery on Thursday as freezing rain is in the forecast.

Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning on Wednesday for north and east Lambton County, London-Middlesex, Oxford, Huron, Perth, Bruce, Grey, and Wellington counties.

A special weather statement for Sarnia and west Lambton County was upgraded to a freezing rain warning Thursday morning but ended shortly before 9:30 a.m. The freezing rain warning ended for north and east Lambton, and London-Middlesex shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday. The warning later ended for Goderich and South Huron County at around 11:20 a.m.

The national weather agency said freezing rain with ice accretion of a few millimetres is possible, beginning Thursday morning. The precipitation is expected to transition to rain or snow late Thursday morning, and then to rain or drizzle in the evening.

Strong wind gusts of around 70 kilometres per hour are also possible.

During this time, power outages may occur and roadways may become slippery.

Other areas, such as Chatham-Kent, and Windsor-Essex remain under a special weather statement due to windy weather conditions on Thursday.

Provincial police have also released a winter driving reminder.

Motorists are asked to slow down during poor weather conditions, leave extra travel time, leave extra space between vehicles, and avoid sudden braking or accelerating.
