Over 30 impaired driving charges laid during London Festive RIDE checks

Holiday sobriety checks in London saw thousands of vehicles stopped, but only 31 impaired driving related charges issued.

The London Police Service carried out its annual Festive RIDE program, setting up eight sobriety checkpoints in the city throughout November and December.

In total, officers stopped 4,167 vehicles. Of those stopped, three drivers were issued three-day licence suspensions, three were charged with criminal code offences, and 25 were issued highway traffic act offence tickets.

"London Police Service want to remind the public that if they are going to drink, please take a cab, have a designated driver, or make alternate arrangements," police said in a statement issued on Monday.

Last week, West Region OPP announced the results of its Festive RIDE campaign. Between November 16 and January 1, police conducted 2,446 impaired driving checks on roads in the region. They resulted in 353 impaired driving charges being laid, up from 278 during the previous year's Festive RIDE campaign.
