School buses outside London cancelled for the day

Freezing rain that coated the area in an icy shell has led school buses outside of London to be cancelled for the day Tuesday.

Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services confirmed just before 6 a.m. that school purpose vehicles in Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin counties and the Red Zone will not be hitting the roads. To see the full list of bus cancellations click here.

School buses in the City of London will be running on schedule.

The decision to cancel the buses for most of the region comes after freezing rain fell across the region overnight and is expected to continue in the morning. It also comes as a system packing between 5 to 10 centimetres of snow moves into the area. Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning and a winter weather travel advisory for London, Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin. The weather agency warns freezing rain will transition to snow Tuesday morning. The snow will become heavy at times and will continue throughout the day tapering to periods of light snow by the evening. During the system's peak, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 centimetres per hour are possible. The accumulating snow is expected to make roads, sidewalks, and parking lots difficult to navigate.

The London District Catholic and Thames Valley District school boards have confirmed all schools will be open on Tuesday.
