Silence on status of LHSC boss as leave approaches six months

The London Health Sciences Centre's website lists Jackie Schleifer-Taylor as President and Chief Executive Officer.

However, she's been off the job for half a year and there's no sign of that changing anytime soon.

"Could you imagine if the Prime Minister of Canada just disappeared for six months and there was no comment about it? This is ridiculous," said healthcare advocate Peter Bergmanis of the Ontario Health Coalition. "This is an accountability position to the public."

Schleifer-Taylor made $803,584 in salary and taxable benefits in 2023, according to Sunshine List data - an increase of nearly $270,000 from her 2021 total.

Dr. Kevin Chan has been acting as interim President and CEO in Schleifer-Taylor's absence.

"At London Health Sciences Centre, we place a high priority on the health and wellbeing of our employees. Dr. Jackie Schleifer Taylor remains on leave, and we can confirm that Dr. Kevin Chan continues to be in the role of LHSC’s acting president and CEO," hospital communications staff said in a statement.

Her absence began as the hospital was in the middle of a travel scandal uncovered by the London Free Press - which showed executives had spent or had planned to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on trips to Australia, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates.

The hospital's board chair, Matthew Wilson, said at the time the leave began that the two are unrelated.

"I'm skeptical," Bergmanis said. "Unfortunately, this board has not shown itself to be trustworthy and open and transparent enough for the public to actually believe that."

Ontario's Ministry of Health said the travel expenses would be subject to an investigation. However, no results have been made available and it's unclear whether an investigation has even commenced.

Spokespeople for the Ministry of Health did not return requests for comment on this story.

"These aren't blank cheques to the hospital that disappear," said Bergmanis. "There's no accountability to the public. It's enormously frustrating."
