A proposal to have Bayfield and the Municipality of Bluewater on the way to becoming Blue Communities never got off the ground at this week's Bluewater Council meeting.
Following a presentation from Ray Letheran of Bayfield, Bayfield Ward Councillor Bill Whetstone made a motion asking that staff be directed to look into the financial impact of Bayfield meeting the three criteria for becoming a Blue Community.
The criteria include recognizing water as a human right, supporting the concept of eliminating bottled water, making sure tap water is available, and prohibiting the sale of bottled water in any municipally-owned facility.
That motion failed to get a seconder as did a second motion expanded to include the entire municipality of Bayfield.
Whetstone says all he was asking for was a report back from staff, but he's hoping with more education another motion can be brought before council.
Whetstone points the village of Bayfield has been an unofficial Blue Community for more than a year now with 34 organizations in Bayfield supporting the Blue Community designation.
