Meaford A Leader In Waste Diversion

Meaford continues to be a leader in waste management despite changes in Waste Diversion Ontario’s (WDO) method of calculating waste diversion rates for municipalities.

Environmental Services Director Rob Armstrong says WDO changed its method of calculating waste disposal and diversion rates in 2014. A municipality’s waste diversion rate is the percentage of materials (bottles, tins, cardboard, compost, etc.) that can be diverted from its landfill site.

Armstrong says this different method of calculation resulted in Meaford’s waste diversion rate dropping to just above 57% for 2014.

“In earlier years Meaford's waste diversion rate was higher than 60%, says Armstrong.

Despite the slightly lower rating it doesn’t affect Meaford’s overall high standing much because WDO’s new calculation method affects all municipalities rated by the agency.

Meaford’s success at recycling is still among the seven best waste diversion rating for municipalities taking part in Ontario’s waste diversion program.
