MP Will Push Government To Recognize Diefenbaker's Birthplace In Neustadt

Bruce Grey Owen Sound's MP wants the government to reconsider acquiring Diefenbaker House in Neustadt.

Larry Millers says the birthplace of former Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker is an important piece of history for Grey County, and he will continue to push for the creation of a museum at the location.

Recently, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna stated the department was unable to consider preserving the site at this time.

The ministry, which also oversees national historic sites, indicated the government was not interested in the location.

The home was purchased by a history enthusiast and was operated by volunteers and The Canadian Royal Heritage Trust in an effort to preserve the location. The owner recently passed away, and left the home to the Government of Canada in his will so it could commemorate Diefenbaker. However, if the donation is not accepted, the house will be sold.

A private members motion calls on the government to accept the offer, designate the property as a national historic site, and undertake the necessary restorations to become a museum. The motion says the site could be used to educate the public on the life of Canada's 13th prime minister, and his impact on Canada's heritage.
