The head of Huron County's Injury Prevention Program says the two leading causes of injuries in the county are falling, and vehicle collisions.
Chisomo Mchaina says age is one factor in the number of falls, but other factors include isolation, lack of access to services and lack of transportation.
The higher number of vehicle collisions can be attributed to the fact that people tend to drive greater distances in rural areas than they would in an urban centre; we don't have public transit, and we have to deal with wildlife on the roads, and slow-moving vehicles.
Mchaina says the OPP refer to the Big Four causes of vehicle collisions as impaired driving - and that can be alcohol or drugs and even prescription drugs - distracted or inattentive driving, using seat belts incorrectly or not at all, and speeding.
