Despite the fresh dump of snow on the ground, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile clubs say most trails in Midwestern Ontario remain closed.
Karen Buratynski is the manager for District 9, which runs south of Georgian Bay, up the Bruce Peninsula and down the Lake Huron shoreline, says while they are pleased with snowfall in December, they do need to finish staking some trails and adding additional signage.
She also says most areas across the province are reporting "significant amounts of water under the snow. Since the snow fell on wet, unfrozen ground, it is acting as an insular" and clubs require colder temperatures over several consecutive days to begin making more trails available.
Riders are reminded that snowmobiling on closed trails is considered trespassing, and with the water issues, it is "extremely important they stay off until the time is right".
The only trail in the area currently open is the "B110 Trail", which runs from Dundalk to Owen Sound.
