Woman arrested in fraudulent fundraising canvass

Owen Sound police have made an arrest in connection to a fraudulent fundraising canvass investigation after being contacted by multiple businesses.

Police received the calls on Wednesday, September 20, with reports of a woman going store to store, looking for cash donations, supposedly going to the family of Sharif Rahman. They added she claimed to be an employee of the city.

Rahman died in August after being assaulted outside of his Owen Sound restaurant, The Curry House.

"Thanks in large part to the cooperation of several business owners, police were able to secure evidence and identify the female responsible for this fraud," police said in a media release.

Upon arrest, officers also found the accused had a significant amount of stolen property from a local grocery store. Arrest warrants were held by the Owen Sound Police Service, Grey County OPP, and Huron County OPP.

A 42-year-old woman of no fixed address is facing charges of fraud, false pretenses, theft, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Anyone who was approached for donations, whether money was given or not, is asked to contact Constable Josh Gurney at 519-376-1234 ext. 174 or at jgurney@owensoundpolice.com.
