Taxpayers group says the carbon tax costs families

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is warning that despite carbon tax rebates, families are still paying hundreds of dollars more toward the tax than they get back.

The federation pointed to calculations from the Parliamentary Budget Office that showed the carbon tax is costing the average household up to $710 this year after the rebates.

The PBO found Ontarians will pay out about $478 dollars more per household in 2023, and Albertans will pay $710.

While the Trudeau government claimed that families are better off with the carbon tax and rebate scheme, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation said the PBO report found that to be untrue.

“The Parliamentary Budget Officer is clear: the carbon tax costs families hundreds of dollars more than the rebates they get back,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “The PBO shows politicians are using magic math to mislead Canadians.”

“It simply isn’t credible to believe the feds can raise taxes, skim some off the top for administration costs and somehow make families better off,” Terrazzano said. “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should scrap his carbon tax to save families hundreds of dollars every year.”
