Huron County Library puts youth atop priority list

The Huron County Library has solidified its strategic plan through 2028, putting youth as a main priority moving forward. That's alongside welcoming and inclusive communities, innovation, communication, and literacy.

"Youth is certainly an area that we want to focus on to make sure that they're engaged, they see themselves of ambassadors of the library, and they recognize the services and how the library can support them in their education and social needs," said Beth Rumble, county librarian.

She added the library was lucky enough to get some funding to put towards the young minds of Huron County and cultivating a space they can learn, grow, and thrive in.

"We're looking for more youth feedback," she said. "We don't want to put stuff out there and see what sticks. We want to hear from youth, what they want from the library."

Rumble said the library is considering a youth advisory council to further that connection with the kids they serve.

In addition, the funding will also be put towards building new spaces and programs for kids.

"Libraries have changed a lot in the last 15 to 20 years and we really want to make sure that the community is aware of the full breadth of programs and services we offer," said Rumble.

Rumble said these points of priority are something the library strives towards, especially inclusion, but having it be part of the plan ensures everybody is on the same page and working towards the same goals.

"This plan was very staff led," she said. "We had staff from all levels that were part of the development. I'm most looking forward to the cohesion."
