First round of Walkerton bridge repairs should wrap in February

The first phase of rehabilitation work on a major Walkerton bridge is projected to wrap up in February.

Bruce County's Transportation and Environmental Services department says the immediate half-joint repair work being done on the Durham Street Bridge is on budget and progressing well.

The bridge has been reduced to one lane of alternating traffic throughout much of the work, which began in May. The construction is projected to be completed in late February 2025.

The County says it expects both lanes to be open on the bridge once Phase 1 work is complete. Weight restrictions will also be reassessed at that point.

However, there is still a second phase of work that needs to be completed in order to extend the life of the bridge. The Schedule ‘C’ Environmental Assessment for that project was recently completed, so staff expect that work to get underway shortly following Phase 1.

Lane closures will tentatively be in place in Spring 2025, with the expectation that Phase 2 will be completed by Fall 2025.
