United Way program ensures fresh food isn't a luxury for Grey-Bruce residents

Fresh fruits and veggies at half the cost.

In an effort to fight against food insecurity and inflation, United Way of Bruce Grey is working to increase awareness of its Good Food Box program. The volunteer-powered, community-driven initiative provide families with a box of 10 to 12 produce items for just $22.

“Every week, more families are telling us they’re making tough choices—between paying for rent or buying groceries,” said Francesca Dobbyn, executive director of United Way of Bruce Grey. “The Good Food Box is one way we can relieve that pressure, making sure people have access to good food without sacrificing other essentials.”

Produce for the program is purchased in bulk, which allows United Way to sell the boxes valued at roughly $40 for half the cost.

The boxes are offered monthly through participating community partners, including local libraries, health units, and family support centres. They are offered to anyone who wants one with no income thresholds or eligibility requirements.

“Food should never be a luxury,” said Dobbyn. “We invite everyone in our region to spread the word, volunteer, or order a box. Together, we can build a healthier, more food-secure Grey Bruce.”

Food boxes can be ordered online through the United Way website at unitedwayofbrucegrey.com/good-food-box. People who choose to order the fruits and vegetable medley are asked to bring their own bag or box to transport the produce home.
