The Town of Goderich will tear down the Rotary Cove Arches before the summer arrives.
Council approved the demolition of the arches at this week's meeting. The measure was recommended by staff in order to "address safety, operational, and site-use considerations" for the aging structure.
Demolition will cost an estimated $25,000 which will come out of the Waterfront Reserve Fund.
In the report to council, staff noted that they had discussions with Rotary Club of Goderich representatives, who expressed interest in contributing funding if the Town decides to reconstruct the arches.
Council will decide whether the arches will be rebuilt a later date. During the demolition of the current arches, staff say crews will try and retain and refurbish materials for possible reuse, in order to reduce costs and preserve elements of the existing structure, should Council elect to rebuild.
A specific timeline for when the arches will come down was not provided, but the Town says it will be "before peak summer season."
