Canterbury College building a new student residence

Students at the University of Windsor will have more choices on campus when it comes to finding a place to live.

Canterbury College and its board of directors have announced plans to build a new three-storey student residence. Glos and Associates is designing a building with 32 single apartments and 30 rooms for shared accommodation with commons kitchens and living space. PCR Contractors will build the new facility. The new building will be divided internally into five "houses" with its own head of house to ensure residents follow the policies of Canterbury College and encourage social interaction.

Windsor Family Credit Union is providing financing for the project, but donations from the public are also being accepted.

"The new residence will significantly elevate the profile of Canterbury College in its role as part of the broader University of Windsor community to enrich the lives of our students," said Principal Dr. Gordon Drake.

Canterbury College is affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada and is an affiliated college with the University of Windsor.

"[It's] a continuation of its history of adaptation and expansion to meet the changing needs of the college, the University of Windsor and its students," said Bishop Linda Nicholls with the Diocese of Huron.

Canterbury College was incorporated in June of 1957 and has grown to own most of the properties in the block between University Avenue West and Riverside Drive West. The 11 houses together with Geoffrey Fisher Hall provide accommodation for 140 students. When the new residence is complete, it will replace three existing houses and increase capacity to 180 students.
