After years of sitting empty, the former Lear site in east Windsor will see a $250 million residential development.
The City of Windsor and Farhi Development has announced plans to build seven residential condo buildings and 101 single-family homes on the land.
Company founder Shmuel Farhi said they have been working with the city for over three years to get this project underway.
"That's a huge undertaking," said Farhi. "The time is right to do it, we happy to do it, we take great pride in our major quarter-billion-dollar development in the city of Windsor."
Remediation of the land is expected to start immediately with foundations for the first condo building expected to begin this fall.
Developers are hoping to move forward on the single-family homes starting in June of 2020. Homes will start at around $650,000.
Through the brownfield redevelopment program, the developer will receive around $10 million in grants from the City of Windsor.
The development will also include a land swap which will move an entrance to WFCU Centre and add a new exit on the west side of the property. In return, the City of Windsor will be given land across the street from the WFCU Centre for additional parking.
It's expected the overall development will create around 200 construction jobs over the next two to four years.
