South Cameron Boulevard shut down until Monday morning

The City of Windsor has closed South Cameron Boulevard between Dougall Avenue and Northwood Street, so crews can remove the CN Rail tracks and install a pedestrian path.

South Cameron closed at noon Friday for a busy 48 hours of work.

"I do believe they want them to complete by Sunday night," said Project Administrator Joe Dattilo. "CN is allowing the contractors to start earlier, so if they have the chance, they can do some early work in the area, and that way, they won't be so pressured for Saturday, Sunday work."

First, crews will remove the rail tracks. Next, they will dig down about eight metres where the new pre-cast concrete box culvert will go in. Finally, the tracks will go back in place.

The box culvert will house the path for pedestrians and cyclists under the tracks.

Workers at CN Rail are currently on strike, but Dattilo told BlackburnNews.com the work stoppage would not impact the project.

"There has been no hold up to this project due to the CN workers strike," he said. "We're right on track and able to do this on time."

Even though South Cameron Boulevard is expected to reopen by 7 a.m. Monday, Dattilo said drivers may still see some activity in that area while workers wrap up the project.

The area has been dubbed the "Dougall Death Trap" because of the close proximity of cyclists and drivers there.

City council approved almost $9 million in improvements in that area last April.
