Friday is the last day to have your say on a new name for Suicide Hill in Little River Park.
The Windsor-Essex branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is petitioning to have the name changed to combat the stigma surrounding suicide.
“We believe the time is now to officially name this hill with a proper name,” said Director of Communications and Health Promotions Kim Willis, “Since research indicates glorifying or celebrating suicide can be detrimental to the work we are doing in education and prevention.”
There are five names under consideration. They are Hope Hill, Little River Hill, Riverside Hill, Sara Anne Widholm Hill, and Thrill Hill.
Sara Anne Widholm was a 76-year-old woman who spent a lot of time walking the Ganatchio Trail before she was brutally beaten in October of 2017. She never recovered and passed away in December 2018.
The CMHA put out a call to rename the hill in May. Staff narrowed down the selections to five names for the community to vote on.
Once the votes close, the organization plans to present the winning selection to Windsor City Council and request to officially rename the popular toboggan hill.
