Border opens to American visitors

The Canadian border is now open to fully vaccinated Americans.

However, Canadian travellers wishing to go to the U.S. will still have to wait until at least August 21.

It is still up in the air if American border officials would turn away fully vaccinated Canadians when they are allowed to cross.

Americans coming into Canada will not have to quarantine in a hotel or undergo testing on the eighth day of their stay. However, they will need to prove they have had two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and documentation on the ArriveCAN App. Only vaccines approved in Canada, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Astra-Zeneca, and Johnson and Johnson, will be accepted. Travellers may also need to show a plan to quarantine should the need arise.

A tentative deal was reached between the unions that represent workers with the Canada Border Services Agency Friday night and the Treasury Board of Canada after a work-to-rule campaign threatened to snarl traffic for Canada-bound travellers.

The campaign stalled traffic at the country’s busiest border crossing points for hours in some cases.

Canada will begin to accept fully vaccinated travellers from other countries on September 7, but the date is tentative.
