Former paralympic swimmer Danielle Campo-McLeod's recovery journey continues

It's been a year since Danielle Campo-McLeod was in the fight for her life after complications arose after giving birth to her daughter Morgan.

At that time, her mom Colleen Campo put a call out to the community to pray for her daughter’s recovery. The Windsor-Essex community rallied for the family and raised nearly $90,000 through a Go Fund Me campaign.

Over the last year, the former Paralympic swimmer has been regaining her health and has had to recover from a number of surgeries. Her journey is not over yet as she goes in for another surgery this week.

"We are prepping, I mean of course you can imagine we're terrified going back in for another surgery but I feel like I am treating this like a competition and I've got my body in the best possible health state that it can be right now," said Campo-McLeod.

Campo-McLeod is writing a book about her journey and says she is working on something special that she hopes will give something back to the community for joining in her fight.

"We are going to take this situation that happened and use it to teach and build resiliency and celebrate how great our community is," said Campo-McLeod.

The family recently celebrated Morgan's first birthday. Campo-McLeod said on that day, they focused on the celebration instead of reflecting on the difficult year it has been.

"She is just the happiest, funniest little girl. She's got these crazy little teeth that have come in and makes her smile even cuter," said Campo-McLeod. "We really just had our friends and family together and just celebrated that she was turning a year and really made it just about Morgan."
