Leamington completes purchase of waterfront land

The Municipality of Leamington has taken another step toward transforming its waterfront.

Leamington has completed the purchase of waterfront properties for the purpose of building a boardwalk between the Municipality's marina and Seacliff Park.

Adding to waterfront property bought in 1998, the Municipality has closed on the purchase of 50 Gold Coast Road. An agreement had been entered to buy the parcel in November 2020 but was kept confidential until the closing date of Monday, according to a release from the Municipality.

In June, an agreement was reached for Leamington to purchase the land at 399 Erie Street South. This transaction is conditional upon the certification and registration of a survey under the Boundaries Act, which is expected to be completed sometime next year.

"These lands hold tremendous potential," said Mayor Hilda MacDonald in a media release. "And these purchases are a big step forward in creating a vibrant destination that drives tourism, fosters economic success and attracts and retains a new generation to Leamington."

Leamington CAO Peter Neufeld said the acquisitions are key to the continued development of a prized asset.

"The purchase of these lands is a critical piece in creating a continuous, connected public waterfront and creating several economic development opportunities," said Neufeld.  "Importantly, it also creates a space for the entire community and visitors alike to enjoy for many generations to come."

The land was bought with money from reserves set up for that purpose, and it was recommended in the waterfront master plan approved by Leamington Council in June.

Complete information about the waterfront master plan can be found on the official Municipality website.
