Man arrested after damaging police cruiser with stolen vehicle

Windsor police arrested a 35-year-old man after a police cruiser was deliberately hit by a stolen van.

Officers responded to a call, just before 1 p.m. on Friday, about a Dodge Caravan that was stolen on Rankin Avenue, police said.

Police quickly located the vehicle in the area of Crawford Avenue and University Avenue West and partially blocked it in.

According to police, the driver then struck three parked vehicles, rammed a police cruiser multiple times, and sped from the scene.

"Though the damage to the police cruiser was extensive, the officers inside didn’t sustain physical injuries as a result of the collision," police said in a release.

In the driver's attempt to flee, police said that his erratic driving caused him to hit a light pole on Norman Road which caused the Caravan to burst into flames.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot and was arrested after a short pursuit.

The man faces charges of:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

  • Flight from a peace officer

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
