Summer-like temps to give way to unseasonably cool weather

Enjoy the hot, humid weather while it lasts.

Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures across southwestern Ontario to go from unseasonably warm to unseasonably cool by the Thanksgiving long weekend.

"People who want their pumpkin spice lattes and sweater weather for Thanksgiving are going to get that," said Trudy Kidd, a warning preparedness meteorologist with the national weather agency. "Friday will be a pretty typical fall day - cloudy, chance of showers, high of 17 C - but then Saturday, Sunday, Monday we are below seasonal."

The reason for the big temperature shift, according to Kidd, is a ridge of high pressure that has been stuck over the region since last Sunday will be pushed out by a low pressure system toward the end of the week.

"What is really wild is that daytime highs this weekend are not even going to be as warm as Tuesday and Wednesday night's lows," said Kidd.

Temperatures Saturday and Sunday are expected to only climb to 13 C and 10 C. That is in sharp contrast to record-breaking high temperatures in the high 20s forecast for London, Sarnia, and Chatham-Kent both Tuesday and Wednesday. Windsor falls just a few degrees short of any record breaking potential.

Chatham's records of 21.9 C and 22.9 C set in 2021 are expected to easily fall both days. In Sarnia, the record highs to beat are 27.7 C and 28.2 C, both set in 2005. London has the oldest records to shatter of 27.8 C set on October 3, 1971 and 27.2 C set on October 4, 1951. The city narrowly missed smashing Tuesday's record with the daytime high topping out at 27.4 C.

The average high for this time of year is around 17 C.

While some people will be sad to see the summer-like temperatures go, Kidd noted this likely isn't the end of the region's warm fall days.

"Even in November and December we still have a forecast that we expect to be warmer than normal," said Kidd. "I don't think this is it. I don't think we are going to be bundled in our hats, scarves, and jackets here on out. I think we will have some warm breaks."
