Ambassador Bridge seeks permission to bring corrosive materials and flammable liquids across

The Detroit International Bridge Company, which owns the Ambassador Bridge, is again asking the Michigan Department of Transportation to loosen the restrictions on what hazardous materials it can allow to cross.

The City of Windsor will likely send the Michigan Department of Transportation another letter expressing its strong opposition.

It's not the first time the bridge company has asked permission to allow trucks carrying flammable liquids and corrosive materials. It made similar requests in 2013 and 2020. Both times, Windsor expressed opposition.

Trucks carrying explosives, gases, flammable solids, oxidizing substances, poisonous and infectious substances, radioactive material, and other miscellaneous goods are currently allowed to cross the border at the Ambassador Bridge.

The Michigan Department of Transportation studied the stateside risk but found no imperative for a change.

City staff oppose loosening the restrictions, saying it would pose a significant risk to commercial trade, thousands of Windsor residents living near the bridge, the University of Windsor campus, and the environment.

They also point out the Ambassador Bridge is over 90 years old and doesn't meet modern standards, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which will meet the criteria, will open in 2025.

A report to councillors says the city has not seen an analysis of fire protection or life safety requirements at the bridge.

Windsor City Council will decide Monday night whether to send the letter to the authoritative body in Michigan.
