Stop The Traffik Gift Box Arrives

It's a brightly decorated seven by 11ft gift box that promises a better life but once you step inside, the horrors of human trafficking become all too real.

The "Gift Box", the brainchild of the international organization Stop The Traffik and the United Nations, will be in front of Sarnia City Hall from 1pm Friday until 7pm Tuesday evening.

Sexual Assault Survivors Centre Executive Director Michelle Batty says residents would be surprised if they were aware of the issue locally. We're a border city with a busy shipping industry.

"Most people think of the international trafficking situation but there is also domestic trafficking," she says. "We're aware of a number of situations where persons have been trafficked between provinces or across Canada."

Human trafficking is the world's fastest growing global crime and is one of the largest sources of income for organized crime, exceeded only by drug trafficking.
