UPDATE: Silent night at Centennial, following complaint

A compromise has been made to try to keep the sounds of Christmas alive at Sarnia's Celebration of Lights.

It was a silent night Monday at Centennial Park as a result of a noise complaint.

Celebration of Lights board member Cathie Blake-Baker says they've been granted a noise bylaw exemption.

She said the music in the park will be on from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. instead of midnight, and the volume will be lowered.

"As far as we were concerned it wasn't very loud anyways. So to turn it down more, I mean it wasn't up very high, so we're going to do our best to turn it down a little bit more, but I don't know how that's going to work," said Blake-Baker.

Blake-Baker said if that doesn't satisfy the complainant, there will not be music.

Celebration of Lights chairperson John Charest said it's the first time there have been any noise complaints that he's aware of.

He expressed disappointment on CHOK's The Talk Show with Sue Storr Tuesday morning.

"In the summertime you got all those other events going on in the park like Borderfest, Ribfest and that music is ten times louder," said Charest. "But, when it comes to Christmas time when it's a time of Christmas cheer and kids and all that stuff, come on. This is Christmas time, a time for family, a time for kids. When you turn off that sound in the park, you lose all cheer and joy."

The Celebration of Lights is on at Centennial Park until January 2.
