Police cracking down on impaired drivers

Sarnia police want everyone to have a safe and happy New Year.

Constable John Sottosanti said officers will be cracking down on motorists who choose to drink and drive.

"The severity for everything has increased, as well the government has allowed for the police to be able to demand a sample of breath without any suspicion," said Sottosanti. "The reasoning behind that, there are individuals that you look at them, you talk to them and they look as sober as you and I right now, but unfortunately we can't always catch them. This gives us another tool that allows us to test and ensure that people are driving responsibly."

Lambton OPP will also be conducting ride checkpoints throughout the county.

Consequences for drinking and driving include vehicle impoundment, suspended licenses, fines and jail time.

Sarnia transit is also offering free service from 6:15pm December 31st until 2:45am on January 1, 2019.
