The old Boblo Island ferry has gone up in flames in Detroit.
Local 4 News in Detroit is reporting the boat caught fire around noon on Friday at Riverside Marina across from Belle Isle.
WDIV says a welding accident sparked the massive fire that destroyed the historic mahogany woodwork and upper decks. The welder was working on a beam that connects to the smoke stack when a spark fell to the second deck.
The owners estimate the fire caused $250,000 in damages and are hoping the community can help them rebuild the boat.
The historic SS Ste. Claire has been docked at that marina since last year.
The boat was built in 1910 and carried people up and down the Detroit River until 1991.
The amusement park on Boblo Island closed in 1993.
