High school classrooms across Ontario will be empty Thursday afternoon.
Students across the province have planned a walkout protesting the Ford Tories decision to eliminate free post-secondary tuition for low-income students and increase high school class sizes.
Sarnia police Cst. John Sottosanti said they're working with participating local students, and they're asked to stay off the roads.
"Obviously people have the freedom to share their point of view and we totally support that, but again safety is our number one priority," said Sottosanti. "We want to remind people that to stay off the roadways."
Students at St. Patrick's High School, Northern, Great Lakes Secondary School, North Lambton Secondary school and LCCVI are participating in the protest, over the noon hour and in the early afternoon.
Cst. John Sottosanti said motorists should be prepared to see hundreds of students outside area high schools and along city sidewalks.
"Drivers out there are asked to slow down while in the area and ensure pedestrian safety, to avoid any mishaps," said Sottosanti.
Both the separate and public school boards have indicated the students will be marked absent and parents will be notified, however, they will not be issuing suspensions.
