Officials in Sarnia are hoping we can learn from a city in Italy that's known as an "epicentre of asbestos disease."
A delegation from Casale Monferrato is making a stop in Sarnia this week to share its story.
The city has closed the cement factory where asbestos was used, and have gone to great lengths to make people suffering from mesothelioma more comfortable.
Retired Unifor worker John Millholland said asbestos remains an issue locally.
"In Sarnia, we still have mesothelioma and many asbestos-related cancers popping up," said Millholland. "It's something that was there in the past. There's still a lot of asbestos out there right now. I think mesothelioma is something that's not going away in a hurry."
Millholland said Casale Monferrato has also introduced asbestos educational programs in schools and improved hospice care.
The public is invited to hear from the delegation on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Dante Club.
