Cases linked to Sarnia Salmonella outbreak grow

There are now 15 cases of Salmonella food poisoning linked to an outbreak at Sarnia's Barakat restaurant on Lambton Mall Road.

Lambton Public Health announced Friday, October 30 that four cases had been confirmed and it was following up with several other people who reported becoming ill.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade reported Monday the numbers have grown significantly.

"We now have 15 lab confirmed cases of Salmonella and over 100 folks who have responded to our symptom survey to say that they're symptomatic and may have had an exposure by eating at the facility during the time-window that we identified."

Dr. Ranade said the health unit is still waiting for results to see if they can identify a particular source.

"But in general, that part of the investigation always takes time -- it's dependent upon labs and lab testing and samples and things like that -- but we've had a really good working relationship with this facility and our inspections have gone well there -- they have not identified any major issues in terms of what might have been the cause from that perspective."

The restaurant voluntarily closed while the investigation takes place.

The health unit is still advising anyone who ate at Barakat Mediterranean Cuisine between October 21 and October 29 and became ill with symptoms like diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and vomiting, to call Lambton Public Health at 519 383-8331.
