Contractor fined for building walls along Lake Huron shoreline

A contractor has been slapped with a large fine for allegedly constructing walls along the Lake Huron shoreline.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) said it happened in the Beach O'Pines subdivision, just north of the Pinery Provincial Park.

Richard Webb has pleaded guilty to five charges under the Conservation Authorities Act, and ordered to pay a $13,500 fine.

The ABCA said there were also three landowners charged in connection with the work, and one has already pleaded guilty. Charges against the other two are still before the court.

"Any development activities within a regulated area require permission from the Conservation Authority," said Daniel King, ABCA Regulations Coordinator and Provincial Offences Officer. "Regulations are in place and permits are required to ensure development such as shoreline walls do not negatively affect erosion, dynamic beaches, flood control, pollution, or the conservation of land."

Anyone considering development activities, like the construction of seawalls, is asked to contact the ABCA first to verify whether a permit is needed.

Doing so will help avoid potential delays, costs, or even fines.
