Reading promoted in Sarnia with Little Free Libraries

More Little Free Libraries can now be found at several parks within Sarnia.

An official unveiling of one of the installations was held last week at Marcin Park.

"[It was] a very exciting moment for all three key partners to see the Little Free Libraries come to life," said Community Services Coordinator Rachel Veilleux.

The project between Literacy Lambton, the Rotary Club of Sarnia, and the City of Sarnia will see five Little Free Libraries installed throughout the community. At this point, four have been installed and the fifth will be up by this fall.

The initiative began with a pilot project, organized by Literacy Lambton in 2021. Veilleux said the program turned out to be a success so Literacy Lambton approached the city about permanent installations.

"To be able to offer Little Free Libraries in any community, you do need stewards who act as volunteers that provide maintenance and care," said Veilleux. "That is where Literacy Lambton first engaged the Rotary Club of Sarnia."

The three groups determined which parks would be suitable for the installations based on a few factors, including highly-visited areas and whether there were already privately-owned Little Free Libraries in the area.

Books available at the Little Free Libraries are geared to readers of all ages. Community members can borrow books for free and leave behind their own used books if they wish.

The Little Free Libraries are located at Germain Park, Twin Lakes Park, Centennial Park, and Marcin Park. The fifth installation will be at Wiltshire Park.
