United Way marks 27th annual Day of Caring

Volunteers are donating their time Tuesday for the annual United Way Day of Caring.

Executive Director Dave Brown said it marks the official kickoff to their fundraising campaign.

He said about 150 volunteers will be working at 18 different job sites across the county.

"We've scaled back the Day of Caring a little bit this year," said Brown. "Typically we'll have 200 to 250 volunteers who are spread out throughout Sarnia and Lambton County doing work at agencies in the community, but mostly we're doing more and more work at the homes of seniors and people with disabilities helping with light maintenance, cleaning gutters, helping turn over gardens, that kind of thing. We know we're going to get a lot of much needed work done having not done the Day of Caring for two years."

The needs target for the 2022 fundraising effort is $1.65 million.

Brown said so far, $346,000, or 21 per cent of the goal has been raised.

"We are really happy to be at the one-fifth mark already just as the campaign is ready to kick off," he said. "So we're really excited about our start and we hope that that momentum is going to carry on."

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton funds 17 agencies providing over 31 programs and services to the community.
