Police say thefts on the rise during holidays

Sarnia police are reminding the community to remain vigilant around the holiday season.

According to Cst. Nelson Amaral, this time of year is when police see an increase in property thefts.

"Everyone's out, a lot on their mind, lists to cover going from store to store and really not thinking about what's happening in the parking lot while they are in store shopping," he said.

Amaral said while residents are window shopping at stores, thieves are window shopping in the parking lot.

"The idea here is to not make your car a desirable target," he said.

Amaral said it only takes a little bit of effort to keep your belongings safe.

"Try to park in a well lit area, keep your vehicle locked, keys removed, windows closed and valuables out of sight. If they can't be put in the trunk at minimum try to cover them up," he said.

Sarnia police are also providing tips to prevent packages from being stolen from porches.

"(We recommend) to track your packages, use the tracking software offered by delivery companies to monitor where your package is being delivered and when it's being delivered so you plan to receive it in person. Have a secure delivery location. Wherever possible have your packages delivered to a spot where someone can receive them in person," Amaral said.

He is also recommending that residents request a signature upon delivery, choosing a delivery service that requires a signature to prevent the package from being left unattended. He also suggests installing outdoor security cameras with a sight line of the door step.

Amaral also told Sarnia News Today that Sarnia police are finding more people are installing security and doorbell cameras.

"It really has helped as a deterrent and it also has helped us in a number of investigations," he said.

Amaral explained that residents can register their security camera with Sarnia police, which will be done through Crime Stoppers.
