The new year is here and the City of Sarnia is recommending trying a new activity for your new year resolution.
On January 6, the city will be hosting its annual open house at the Strangway Centre from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.
Communications Manager Steve Henschel said this is an opportunity to explore the different programs and activities the city offers.
"You can talk directly with the instructor about their experiences and what they teach to kind of get a feel for the programs before you register," he said.
According to Henschel, there are more than 75 programs and activities including yoga, shuffleboard, Nordic pole walking, and table tennis.
Henschel said he believes hosting an open house like this is beneficial for the community.
"It's an opportunity to actually get a hands-on idea of what the program offers especially with the chance to talk to the instructors," he said.
During the open house residents will also get the opportunity to tour the Strangway Centre.
Henschel said there is some other things up the city's sleeve for the event.
"We'll also have some live performances going on. So, the chance to enjoy some live entertainment while you're at it," he said.
According to Henschel, the city's recreation programs have been in demand since coming out of the pandemic.
He said hobby shop memberships and registrations have increased.
"In 2022 we had 16 thousand registrations and participation in drop in for pre-registered programs. That number is looking like it might be up to 20 thousand in 2023," Henschel said.
The programs are available for residents aged 20 and up.
"We look forward to having everyone out. It's always a great day down there and the chance to greet the public and ring in the new year," Henschel said.
