Lambton Heritage Museum's first exhibit of 2024 will focus on Spirit, Humanity, Earth (S.H.E.), and Healing.
S.H.E. is Healing will feature 13 spirit portraits painted by local artist Suellen Evoy-Oozeer.
The exhibit is a culmination of a four-year project where Evoy-Oozeer spoke with women in her community and painted portraits inspired by their spirits.
"[Evoy-Oozeer's] work is very evocative and I think brings a lot of people back to questions about how we can heal ourselves and maybe heal mother nature, and heal society. I thought it was very timely and an interesting exhibit to have to open up in 2024," said Curator/Supervisor Dana Thorne.
The large portraits were made with acrylic paint on canvas and are framed with cedar.
S.H.E. is Healing will be on display at the museum from February 1 until February 24.
Thorne said programming will also be held to accompany the exhibit.
"We will be having an adult art class led by [Evoy-Oozeer] on Saturday, February 10 and then there will be two art classes for children as well, those will be on Saturday, February 24, split up into two different age groups. [Evoy-Oozeer] will lead participants through the process of creating their own spirit portrait," said Thorne. "There's also going to be a drumming circle at the museum on Thursday, February 15 in the gallery space with drumming and storytelling."
Admission is free for Lambton County residents and those who present a status card.
However, pre-registration is required in order to participate in the art classes. Details can be found on the museum's website.
