Safety reminder reiterated after dog falls through ice

An incident in Lambton Shores on Wednesday is supporting a message shared by fellow first responders earlier this week, the ice is not safe right now.

Lambton OPP said emergency crews were called at 2 p.m. to an area on Jane Street after a dog fell through the ice.

However, the pet was rescued by a family member before officers arrived on scene.

Media Relations Officer Cst. Jamie Bydeley said officers ensured both the individual and pet got off of the ice safely and no injuries were reported.

Lambton Shores Fire Chief James Marshall said members of the ice water rescue team were responding when they were called off as their services were no longer needed.

Marshall said the incident acts as a good reminder for ice safety.

"It wasn't that long ago that we had clear open rivers and clear open ponds so give a little more time," he said. "Unfortunately, should any individual go through, it's very limited... their abilities to get out safely. If you get underneath the ice, it's even harder to rescue."

Aside from staying off the ice for now, pet owners are asked to keep their fur companions leashed when walking along waterways.

"Try not to put yourself in a situation that's going to go wrong," Marshall said.

The reminder from Lambton Shores Fire comes shortly after Sarnia Fire Rescue advised residents of unsafe shelf ice.

Marshall also told Sarnia News Today, conditions can change rapidly. Concerns were raised about possible flooding on Wednesday due to rain and warm temperatures.
