Potential fireworks ban being assessed in Point Edward

Community feedback regarding possible changes to the fireworks bylaw in Point Edward, including a full ban, will be discussed at a committee meeting next week.

The topic was brought up during a recent Fire Committee Meeting, as members discussed current concerns brought forward to council.

Under the current bylaw, "family fireworks" are permitted on certain days such as Victoria Day, Canada Day, and New Year's Eve. Larger display fireworks require a municipal permit and council approval.

However, council members have received complaints that range from fireworks being set off on non-designated days after 11 p.m., to potential hazardous situations that could arise with the improper use of fireworks.

Mayor Bev Had said she was not in favour of a full ban but would prefer to see them limited to certain holidays, similar to Sarnia.

It was also noted during the January meeting that banning fireworks would be the easiest option on paper, but enforcement would be "extremely difficult."

As a result of the meeting, CAO Jim Burns has been collecting community feedback.

"I've heard from probably about 20 people, give or take, and I will compile that data and kind of summarize it and present that to the committee and we'll go from there," Burns said.

So far, Burns said he's received a variety of responses from residents, many of which are negative.

"Everything from 'yes, there should be an absolute and total ban,' to 'why are we even discussing this? People should be able to do what they want and light fireworks whenever they want.' So the whole gamut is there," Burns said. "There are people that [say] 'yes, on specific days would be good,' so the entire spectrum of potential responses have been submitted."

Residents who would like to provide feedback are asked to contact Burns via email by February 7 at jburns@villageofpointedward.com.

Burns said a discussion will be held at the upcoming Fire Committee Meeting on February 13.

Regardless of whether or not the village implements a fireworks ban or an amendment, committee members said displays will still be visible across the St. Clair River or in nearby municipalities.
