Sarnia FC has partnered with the Vancouver Whitecaps as part of the MLS club's Academy Centre program.
Whitecaps Director of Soccer Development Dan Lenarduzzi says the team's goal is to grow the game of soccer nationally, and provide development opportunities to players at all levels.
As part of the program, players in Sarnia will receive visits from Whitecaps FC staff for further training and evaluation.
"What we're really looking for is to provide general development for all of the players, boys and girls, and for staff," says Lenarduzzi. "We also look at those special players that may have an opportunity to advance. For those types of players, we have some opportunities in London with our London Academy Centre and potentially even onward to Vancouver. It's very difficult for every player to get into a pro club, so we like to provide the scholastic support too."
Sarnia FC Coach Paul Burke says it'll be a tremendous benefit for the club.
"It takes what we're doing, we're trying to do best practice, but no matter how good I am we've just added a professional coach on top of it," says Burke. "So, it'll take us to a whole new level. Whether the player wants to be a professional or just wants to play recreational soccer all of their life, this opportunity is the best you're going to get in this area."
The Whitecaps have 20 academy centres across Canada.
Program details will be determined in the near future with an expected launch this spring.
