Health Unit Changing Heat Alert System

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is changing the way it alerts residents to hot weather events.

Previously warnings were issued using heat levels 1-3 but that's changing to stay consistent with other health units across the province.

Health Promotion Specialist Amandeep Hans says the health unit will now issue alerts for a heat warning or extended heat warning based on Environment Canada weather forecasts.

"The criteria captures three factors that categorizes a heat event, intensity, duration and night time exposure," says Hans.

A heat warning will be issued when there are two days of forecasted temperatures over 31 C (87.8 F), with an overnight low of 21 C or (70 F) or a humidex greater then 42 C (107 F). An extended heat warning will be issued if the same criteria is met for three or more days. A heat emergency will be issued when there is a power outage or drinking water emergency during a heat warning situation.

In the case of a heat warning or extended heat warning residents are advised to drink plenty of water, stay in an air conditioned place and limit outdoor activity to the coolest part of the day.

Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says during heat events people should look for signs of dehydration and heat stroke.

"When they are feeling that their mouths are getting dry and their lips are getting dry. Lack of sweating, it comes in very late, if someone is getting to that point then they are already too late," says Ahmed.

Ahmed says if you feel ill, faint, have difficulty breathing or feel disoriented visit your doctor or nearest hospital.
