A local family with transportation issues will receive a car today, thanks to the United Way of Windsor-Essex and EJ Lajeunesse high school.
The "Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives" program's already helped a few families over the last two and a half years -- something CEO Lorraine Goddard says is life-changing for the people served, especially as our region struggles to provide regional transit.
"These folks have jobs, but have to hitch-hike to work or worry about getting a ride with a friend at work, or paying for a taxi," she explains.
This program takes used cars, in this case donated by Dave Hitchcock Chevrolet, and gives them to students at EJ Lajeunesse as a project to repair. Those cars are then given to families identified by United Way as being in great need of a vehicle.
Goddard hopes to get more schools involved in this program, for the experience it gives students, and to help more families across the region.
