Drivers will have to continue to detour around construction on Windsor's new roundabout at Sandwich St. and University Ave. W.
It was supposed to open September 1, but now City Engineer Mark Winterton does not expect it to open until the end of October. He says the continued archaeological dig is taking a lot longer than expected.
"There's a formal plan that had to go back to the ministry," says Winterton. "That caused us probably a month in delay right there. And, trying to get ahold of the appropriate First Nations band that would be involved in this."
An archeologist contracted by the city has found some artifacts that have to be archived.
Once the dig is complete, the city will need another three weeks to finish the roundabout.
Winterton says the delays have also added to the final cost of the project. He is not sure exactly how much but estimates it could be around $100,000.
Meanwhile, he says the statue of Chief Tecumseh that will sit at the centre of the roundabout has also been delayed. However, the centrepiece should be ready for when the road opens to traffic.
