Jr. hockey wrap-up - September 15, 2018

Nolan DeGurse scored the overtime winner in the Sarnia Legionnaires' 4-3 win over the Leamington Flyers Saturday night at Sarnia Arena.

In the young GOJHL Western Conference regular season, the Flyers hang onto the top spot with four points despite the overtime loss. The Legionnaires pull even at the top with the win.

Sarnia scored the first two goals of the game back-to-back. The first was from Logan Gardner on the power play, the second from William Redick. Leamington cut the Sarnia lead in half at 1:14 left in the frame with a goal from Cameron Armstrong.

Leamington pulled even in the second period as Maddux Rychel scored the period's only goal. Both teams exchanged single goals in the third period. Redick scored his second of the game on the power play to put Sarnia up 3-2, but the Flyers' Adam Jeffery forced the overtime period when he scored the equalizer with 21 seconds left in regulation.

DeGurse's winner came at 2:41 in the extra frame.

Nolan DeKoning had 21 saves in goal for the Legionnaires. Ryan Polidori stopped 24 shots for Leamington.

The Flyers travel to LaSalle Wednesday night while Sarnia hosts the Chatham Maroons Thursday.

Ayden Letang scored a hat trick as the Mooretown Flags routed the Wallaceburg Lakers 10-1 in their home opener.

The Flags sit in a four-way tie for second place in the PJHL Stobbs Division with two points. The Lakers are 0-2 on the young season.

Letang and Daniel Wellington scored within the first two minutes of play for a quick 2-0 Flags lead. Nolan Farr added a scored at 7:35 in the first period. Austin Bentley scored unassisted for the Lakers soon after for Wallaceburg's only point of the game, but Brock Perry answered back over a minute later, and Mooretown lead 4-1 after the opening frame.

It was all Mooretown in the second half as they laid their lead thick with five unanswered goals. Nolan Riley and Cameron Rannie each scored twice in the frame, while Letang scored his second of the night.

Letang completed the hat trick with the only goal in the third period, with one second left in regulation.

Jake Wilkins stopped all but one of the Lakers' 29 shots in the net for Mooretown. Patrick Timpany and Travis Moore combined for 47 saves out of 57 shots in goal for Wallaceburg.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday night. Wallaceburg hosts Dresden while Mooretown travels to Wheatley.
