A new centre for cutting-edge research held a grand opening Wednesday.
The University of Windsor formally opened its new Essex Centre for Research, or "CORe" Centre. The 46,000 square foot "CORe" adds three new floors of open-concept research space, complementing the adjoining Essex Hall, home of some of the university's science and arts programs.
Unveiling the "CORe" Centre was Etobicoke North MP Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport. Duncan, who taught climatology, meteorology and climate change for seven years at U of W, hailed the university's new research centre, calling it key to development in the Windsor-Essex region.
"Not only does this new facility provide our next generation of researchers an excellent place to learn skills and get the experience they need, it also supports economic development and job opportunities in and around Windsor," said Duncan.
Among the research taking place at the "CORe" Centre are advanced materials, including biometrics and nano-technology, transitional health and medical physics. The centre's meeting rooms and hub act as collaborative workspaces.
Dr Chris Houser, U of W's dean of science, agreed that the region would benefit from the research conducted under the centre's roof.
"This is a spot where we have state-of-the-art lab facilities in cancer research, advanced materials and developing new MRI technologies," said Houser, adding that the "CORe" Centre has an MRI machine on the premises.
Development of the "CORe" Centre was supported by a sum of $14.95 million from the federal government, plus $2.56 million from the Ontario government. The university added a commitment of $12.8 million.
The centre has been operational for students, staff and faculty since December of last year.
