It's a bad idea to leave your keys in the ignition

Windsor police are renewing their reminder to the public not to leave their keys in the ignition of their vehicle after a report of a stolen car on Hall Avenue.

Officers on patrol were called to a home on Hall between Assumption Street and Wyandotte Street East early Wednesday morning after a vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle had been left running in the driveway to warm up with the keys in the ignition.

Less than three hours later, an officer from the K-9 Unit was in the area of Wyandotte Street East and Parent Avenue when he saw a vehicle matching the stolen car's description.

It was being driven dangerously on roads that were snow-covered and slippery, but in the snow, fresh tire marks.

The officer followed the tire tracks to Riverside Drive East near Strabane Avenue. The driver tried to flee but was quickly arrested.

Police want to remind drivers never to leave their vehicle unattended and unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

Christopher Dauphin, 28, of Windsor faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, possessing break-in tools, and dangerous driving.
